Home security in Porirua and the use of camera security technology were big talking points at recent home show.

It was great to talk with people that went through the New Zealand Home Expo in Porirua on the weekend of 8th and 9th April. Video monitoring and home security in Porirua were obviously topics of interest to many that came to the Show. This is possibly because ofreasonably high burglary rates in some areas around the region, but also due to an article with video footage that was posted online by Stuff during the weekend of the show. The footage captured two teenagers in Porirua who had been harassing an elderly woman in her home over a two and a half year period.

The appalling behaviour by these young people really shows a lack of respect. Even worse is that the actions were targeted at an older person in the community. It is older people who should be the most cared for and most supported in our neighbourhoods, which is why it makes this sort of activity so shocking. Especially as many of us can relate this activity to how similar behaviour would impact on our older grandparents, parents or family friends. To read more on this, take a look at the article by Stuff.

In terms of burglary and break-in rates, using a great interactive map produced by the NZ Herald, it becomes quite clear where the highest levels of incident are in the wider Porirua area. Over the 18 month period to December 2015, the following suburbs had the following number of reported burglaries:

Porirua Central             121

Titahi Bay South           87

Waitangirua                   86

Elsdon-Takapuwahia   83

Tawa Central                  80

Titahi Bay North            67

Linden                              62

Plimmerton                     37

Onepoto                           31

Camborne                        25

Paremata                         18

Papakowhai North        15

If you are thinking of improving your security measures at home, then we recommend doing some research and looking at what things you can do that will make a difference. A little while ago we prepared a blog on burglary prevention tips for New Zealand homes which might give you a few areas to look at.
