Nelson area burglary rate jumps

The Nelson Bays region has seen a significant increase in the incidence of burglary and robberies over the past year.

Nelson, Motueka, Golden Bay, Takaka, Richmond, Stoke and surrounding suburbs have seen burglaries increase by 52% in a year, compared to a national average increase 16%. Robberies in the region have also jumped by 65%.

Nelson Police have suggested that the regional jump in some crime statistics is partly down to an growing methamphetamine problem, and increasing numbers of youths who offend “for the thrill of it”, but they have also pointed out that historically it isn’t unusual for a region to see waves of crime like this, which then often drop right off over several years.

In an article on the issue, Stuff talked to a family that had been burgled recently, and lost both valuable and sentimental items.

One contradiction stood out in the article though, with one of the couple whose house was broken in to suggesting that “unless people wanted to spend a lot of money on security and insurance, there was nothing homeowners could do to protect themselves from burglars. There’s nothing you can do, absolutely nothing,”

They then went on to say that they had changed the locks at the house and would also install security video system.
